What dog turds can teach children

Jesper Storm Nørskov is the principle at Skorpeskolen in Elsinore, Denmark's first Design for Change school. He and the other teachers at the school use Dialoogle to teach their pupils to be considerate enterprising citizens.

What dog turds can teach children

What can each of us do to make sure that we all live healthier, take better care of the earth and each other and get happier? From local job creation and first aid training on Facebook to disposing of dog turds on the streets – ideas are bubbling up at Skorpeskolen outside Elsinore, Denmark´s first Design for Change school.

Pupils in every grade are making surveys on the streets and contacting the business community and experts to develop the best ideas for making the world a better place – and not least, putting them into practice.

Each year, Skorpeskolen spends three weeks participating in the world´s largest school project to develop ideas that can make the world a better place. A beautiful and worthy purpose in itself, it is, however, just as important to headmaster Jesper Storm Nørskov that the pupils learn to think creatively, rise to the challenge and act constructively on the emerging issues. For this purpose, Dialoogle is one of the standard tools of the school.

During the start-up campaign for the Design for Change-weeks, the pupils work in groups of five across grades from the 0 to the 4th grade and from the 5th to the 9th grade. Dialoogle is used as an icebreaker to help the pupils get over the inherent barriers posed by the age difference in the groups. When developing ideas, the cards also play an important role.

“The Dialoogle cards are special in the sense that they inspire new thoughts and can be interpreted in many ways. They stimulate idea development and help the children to put words to their ideas. Right now, the pupils are working with a lot of cool projects and once they have got a taste for it, you cannot stop them. It is fantastic to experience how the even small pupils take on the challenge of calling business people and experts to get advice and help to realize their ideas,” Jesper says.

Design for Change makes citizenship a part of the curriculum and help children to become active, reflective and responsible citizens in the world. Everyone can take up the DFC- challenge, regardless of subject and grade.
