The meaning of prayer
This exercise can be used in preparation for confirmation and religious studies to understand the of prayer.
- Spread a Magnum Set on the floor.
- Divide the participants into teams of 3.
- Ask each team to choose four picture cards and use them as inspiration to formulate a prayer for the world – the subjects could be peace, the environment, poverty, hunger, love, etc.
- Let the teams discuss what the prayer should include and write it down on a piece of paper. Meanwhile, you walk around talking with the teams about the issues they are working with. If you think that their prayers can be elaborated further, you can ask the participants if they can find more symbolism in the cards.
- When all the teams are ready, they take turns displaying their cards, reading their prayer and explaining it in regard to the cards to the entire group.
- Based on the prayers, you talk to the group about the function of prayer in the church and possibly in other religious contexts. Discuss with the group what prayer can do for the individual person.
- Finally, you place all the cards on the floor again and ask the participants to find a card that inspires a personal prayer. Give them ample time and peace to reflect and formulate their own prayer.
If you are a priest using the exercise in your confirmation class, you can let the students´ prayers be part of the church prayer the first coming service. You can also help the group formulate the church prayer and have them recite it at the service.
