Involving staff in the formulation of values

After the merger of two childcare institutions, there was a need for the staff to define a new platform and a set of common values.

The challenge was to identify and describe the values of the new instution in words and pictures without becoming too academic. Not everybody in the staff of nursery teachers and child minders were used to express themselves in writing. So, letting the Dialoogle picture cards talk was definitely an ideal option.

We started by brainstorming on the concept of values in plenum. For the participants to get hold of the dialoogling methodology and to deal with any scepticism, the manager and assistant manager of the institution plus myself divided the participants among us and perfomed the function as moderators in the three groups. This process was positive, and we experienced that even staff members that used to be quiet and timid spoke up and grew in the proces.

Then we were ready to start working in groups, each visualising the words from the brainstorming with three cards. The groups presented their choice of pictures and their reasons for picking them, and the result of the process can be seen in the institution today in series of picture collages visualising the values of our institution.

That's how we dialoogle!
